For decades, beaches have been Puerto Vallarta's top attraction. Over 26 miles of beaches extend around the Bay of Banderas, including action-packed party spots to hidden coves accessible solely by boat.

In Town -- The easiest to reach is probably Playa Los Muertos, just south of the Rio Cuale. South of Town -- Playa Conchas Chinas, one of the best beaches in Vallarta, is referred to as "The Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta" for the exclusive luxury villas and condominiums. These spectacular, Puerto Vallarta villas are known for offering the most luxury at a, surprisingly, affordable price. Only one mile from town, Conchas Chinas also features fabulous coastline with sections of white sand divided by rugged outcroppings, and crystal blue waters featuring the vibrant sea life.

Playa Mismaloya is in an exquisite protected cove approximately 6 miles south of the city down Highway 200. The water is clear and exquisite, ideal for snorkeling off the beach. Access to the public beach is to the left of the Barcelo La Jolla de Mismaloya.

The Playa Boca de Tomatlan, just down the road, offers a handful of palapa restaurants where you can unwind for the day -- you buy drinks, snacks, or lunch, and you can use the beach chairs and palapa shade. Las Animas, Quimixto, and Yelapa beaches offer an authentic feeling of seclusion; and are accessible only by boat. They are larger than Mismaloya, will offer you captivating hikes, horseback riding to jungle waterfalls, and they are also set up with restaurants along a wide beach. Overnight stays are available at Yelapa.

North of Town -- Most of the northern shoreline from Bucerias to Punta Mita is a succession of sandy coves alternating with rugged inlets. For a long time the beaches to the north, with long, clean breaks, have been the favored area perfect for surfers. The wide sandy beaches at Playa Anclote, Playa Piedras Blancas, and Playa Destiladeras, all with palapa restaurants, have made them popular with local residents seeking an easy getaway. On Playa Anclote you'll find sandy beach with swimming areas, plus a few great palapa restaurants.

The stellar white-sand beach at Punta Mita, home of the Four Seasons, and Punta Mita Private Villas, is closed to road access, with the exception of homeowners and guests of this exclusive resort area. You can rent a panga (small motorized boat) at Playa Anclote and have the captain take you to the Marietas Islands just offshore. These uninhabited islands are a fantastic location for bird-watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, or exploring. Blue-footed booby birds (discovered only here, and in the Galapagos) can be spotted all along the islands' rugged shore, and giant mantas, marine turtles, and bright tropical fish swim amidst the coral cliffs. The islands are honeycombed with caves and hidden beaches--including the stunning Playa de Amor that only arises during low tide. Humpback whales congregate around these islands during the winter season. You may also visit these islands on board one of the numerous day cruises which leave from the cruise-ship terminal. Above all, Puerto Vallarta beaches will be able to satisfy a variety of expectations from one extreme to another.
